Club Opening Soon

We hope you have been managing well during this difficult time, and using the time to stay connected with family and friends. It seems like an eternity since any of us were on a tennis court doing what we love to do.

We have some exciting news to share with our members. On May 14th, the province announced that we will be entering Stage 1 of their overall plan to reopen the economy and get us back to some sense of normality in our daily lives. Stage 1 openings include some outdoor activities, including Tennis and Golf. While Stage 1 officially will start May 19th, community clubs in Markham will need time to work with the City to ensure we open up with proper safe conditions. An opening date will be communicated shortly.

To prepare for our opening we have been reviewing a “Protocols for Safe Opening” document with input from our National and Provincial Associations and from the City, which we will distribute shortly. It does mean that at least initially, playing tennis will look a lot different, but will still allow us to get out and get some exercise.

Some of the strict protocols for us in Stage 1 include: singles tennis only, tennis must be booked ahead of time online (no walk-ons), all play must be supervised so there will be limited hours available to play, no access to the clubhouse or washrooms. These along with physical distancing, use of hand sanitizer, each player only using their own balls to play, will be the norm for the time being. Once we are allowed to progress to Stage 2 (2-4 weeks later), doubles will be introduced.

Thank you to all our members who have already joined this year. Those who have not yet joined but wish to play at our club for what looks like to be a majority of the summer season can join anytime at . We will keep our early-bird specials and bring-a-friend-get-a-racquet special in place all summer long!

I’m sure you’ve been wondering what’s happening with our Bubble Project and how it might affect access to our courts this summer. We did get word that the City will be restarting the Club Winterization component of the project the week of May 18 and will hopefully have all the work done by the end of June. The work should have minimal impact on our ability to access our courts. The other big component of the project is the installation of the grade beams, new fencing and HVAC systems. This was originally postponed until August and September, however, the Bubble operator has yet to make a decision on any commitment for this year. We should know before June 1st.

Please stay well and be assured better days lay ahead.
